La Traviata is now one of his most popular works of Giuseppe Verdi. The libretto by Francesco Maria Piave details the ill-fated love affair between a young gentleman named Alfredo Germont and a terminally ill courtesan named Violetta. It is based on the play La dame aux camélias by Alexander Dumas (Jr.). The opera was premiered at the Teatro La Fenice in 1853. Unfortunately its first staging was unsuccessful: the singers were apparently physically unsuited to the parts and as well as that some of them, as the records say, did not apply themselves very well. The following year Verdi changed the score, only slightly, it was performed again, this time at the Teatro San Benedetto in Venice and finally received the success it deserved - and so it comes that this work is now performed on one of the biggest, if not the biggest opera stage in the world, in front of an audience of 20.000 people. Argentine stage director Hugo de Ana, a regular guest at the world’s most prestigious opera houses, is acclaimed for his spectacular scenery sets and his special use of light. The extra-large stage of the Arena di Verona is his ideal challenge. Soprano Ermonela Jaho, an intense and dramatic Violetta, and Tenor Francesco Demuro, an elegant Alfredo, are both making their Arena debut. Vladimir Stoyanov, giving a commanding yet refined Germont, completes the trio of protagonists.
